Recording Sessions - Acoustic Guitar

Over the past couple of weeks, I've done three recording sessions.  All nice acoustic recordings.  No huge bands to organise!  For now I'll detail the first recording, as I've just got back from a gig, it is late, and I'm tired.

Monday 21st (March) I recorded a talented artist by the name of Max Wilson, performing both the guitar and vocals for his tracks.  The first thing we did is we recorded a guide track.  Just one or two mic's in the room to pick up both the guitar and the vocal at the same time, which microphone used isn't important, as these tracks aren't used in the final recording.  This is then used in the headphones so that when tracking the guitar Max didn't lose his place in the song (so he didn't repeat a chord or didn't miss out a verse).  Once this was done for the three songs we were to record, we went on to record the guitar.

For the guitar, this time, I used two AKG 414s, one Shure SM 57, and the DI output also.  The two 414s are used at the body of the guitar, mid-side set up.  One faces towards the guitar, with a cardioid pickup patten, the second is placed underneath at a right angle with a figure of eight pickup pattern.  The SM 57 was placed up the neck of the guitar, to pick up the nice crisp high ends from the strums and picking of the strings.  The DI was also recorded to give a fourth, clean signal, not containing any of the room acoustics.  Once we had good takes on all of the songs, we moved on to the vocals.

The microphones used for the vocals were a Rode NT2A and a SE Electronics Z5600a II (i think, am not entirely sure).  I used both initially to experiment with the difference in sound picked up by the mic.  The SE mic picked up a nice top end, where the NT2A picked up a warmer sound, a less defined top end.
